The founders of Lincoln's Inn in the 14th century could not have reasonably foreseen that almost seven centuries later, there would be formed in a world far away from them an association of members of the Inn. The suggestion that there should be formed an alumni of Lincoln's Inn in Malaysia first came from Lord Hailsham during his visit to this country in 1987. However, it did not go any further.
Between the spring of 2003 and the summer of 2004 there was a flurry of activity here which resulted in the formation of the Alumni and its formal registration. This was followed by a Gala Dinner at which our Royal Patron, the Sultan of Perak, a distinguished jurist and a Bencher of the Inn, formally inaugurated the Alumni. In attendance were some 800 or more guests including the then Treasurer the Right Honourable Lord Millett and the Under Treasurer Colonel David Hills.
One of the aims of the Alumni, among other things, is to foster close ties between our members in the South Asian region. There is already an Alumni of the Inn in Hong Kong under the Presidency of Mr Justice Frank Stock of the Court of Appeal. I look forward in the not too distant future to the formation of an Alumni in the Republic of Singapore which has many members who were called to the English Bar at Lincoln's Inn.
As students at the Inn we have all had the opportunity to meet and form firm friendships with people from all parts of the Commonwealth. There are therefore strong ties amongst members of Lincoln's Inn wherever they may be. It is important that we continue to foster old friendships and form new ones. To this end, the Alumni will be holding an annual event to which we welcome members of Lincoln's Inn from other jurisdictions as well. These events will include advocacy workshops and lectures by eminent jurists. News about these events will be posted on this website from time to time. So please do access it.
